March 26, 2023: Live & In-Person: SSMQG welcomed Australian Quilter Rachaeldaisy.
We were very excited to welcome award-winning Australian quilter, Rachaeldaisy to our guild! The workshop occurred Sunday, March 26, 10:00 to 4:00 at Stitches Quilt and Craft in Olympia.

Feb. 18, 2023: SSMQG welcomed Sujata Shah
Participants used a simple five step process to make an art quilt with free-form traditional
blocks. With easy-to-follow instructions from the book Cultural Fusion Quilts, this class was
designed to focus on cutting curves through multiple layers of fabrics and sewing curved seams. Individuals constructed blocks resembling an appliqued leaf using a carefree and fun technique and also explored possibilities of various layouts by changing the
orientation of their blocks.
Sujata will share many tips on making Free-Form blocks and offer many suggestions for
color combinations and layouts during the class. You may not stop at just one.
Sujata will teach "Windmills” (left, below) or “Winter” (right, below) from the book, “Cultural Fusion Quilts.” Student photos are below.
2023 Sew-Ins
Virtual Friday Happy-Hour Sew-ins
Occur every Friday through 2023! Join us with favorite beverage in-hand and sew along with your friends over zoom. Break-out rooms and other accommodations will be created upon request. Zoom links sent to all members the day of the sew-in.
Summer In-person sew-ins at Mary's Place
Mary hosted five days of sew-ins at her place in July and August 2023.
Goals were:
Support target of 68 Community Service quilts completed by SSMQG members for 2023. In 2022, SSMQG donated 35 quilts by 63 members.
Have fun, increase social interactions, support camaraderie.
Demonstrate the commitment of SSMQG to our community by providing fabric (donated), batting, backing, simple and fast quilt patterns, and some pre-cut blocks to the members.
Carry out Guild mission (as articulated in the 2023 SSMQG Bylaws) of “Supporting and providing opportunity for charitable works that give back to the community through the use of modern quilting skills”
Summer Sew-in Results:
July 22, 2023
Requested of attendees: Complete 1-2 blocks for a Community quilt
Attendees: 5
Accomplished: At least 3 quilt tops were finished or almost finished that day.
August 21-22-23,2023
Requested of attendees: Complete at least 2-3 blocks for a Community quilt
Attendees: 11
Accomplished: At least 13 quilt tops, or quilts, were finished or almost finished.
Final Outcome
At least 16 quilts for Community Service are expected in the next few weeks!

2023 Fall Retreat
This retreat occurred Sept. 22-24 at Dumas Bay Retreat Centre in Federal Way. 10 people participated.
2023 Spring Retreat
May 12-15, 2023 at Seabeck Conference Center, located at 13395 Lagoon Drive NW, Seabeck, WA 98380. 3 Cheers for another successful Spring retreat in 2023! A deposit has been paid to hold our place at Seabeck Conference Center for the same weekend in 2024!

Raw Edge Portraits Class on 10/29/2022 via Zoom
The Education Committee offered a live Zoom class by Kena Tangi Dorsey on Raw Edge Portraits. The class was held on October 29, 2022, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Abstract-a-licious: Freedom from pressure or the need to make it real. Removing fear and the need for perfection in order to enlarge the artists essential joy in creation.
Improv Piecing the Gee's Bend Way with LeeAnn - July 2021
LeeAnn taught us the Gee's Bend method for improv piecing. LeeAnn shared design and piecing tips as well as history of the Gees Bend sewists. Not only was this a very fun and freeing class, but many participants agreed that this method might be a great way to introduce new sewists/quilters to sewing/quilting.

For any event:
If paying by check, or the PayPal button doesn't work for you and you've shut down and re-started your device, tried again, and the button still doesn't work, do this:
1) Write a check made out to SSMQG for the appropriate amount ($35 for members, $55 for non-members),
2) Photograph the check,
3) Email the photo to the photo to treasurer@southsoundmqg.org and to education@southsoundmqg.org, and then
4) Mail the check to SSMQG Treasurer Lin at her roster address. Nonmembers without roster access: your emailed check image will generate a response email with the address.
